Here at HeresyHammer we want to use our platform to help promote and showcase some of the amazing armies out there in our community. These blog posts will look to look at beautiful models and talk a little bit to the person responsible.

When did you first start gaming and what attracted you to the Horus Heresy?
I first started playing 40K when I moved into my student house in the second year of Uni. Two of my housemates already played & I had been playing a lot of Dawn of War so it was inevitable that I was going to start. Started my first 40K army (Eldar, who are still my favourite) towards the tail end of 4th edition. Added Tau, Dark Eldar and Chaos to my collection as the years passed and eventually started a Chaos Marine army. I picked Word Bearers after eliminating all others for one reason or another. My army had a lot of Forge World vehicles, so when Heresy as a game launched I was well set to play. As infantry were £100 for 10 back then I had a very heavily armoured force which limited me a bit. When the Calth box launched there was no stopping the collection. While 40K has fallen by the wayside after 8th edition stripped all the flavour out of it and I’ve done most of the armies, Heresy remains as that game that’s got good tactical depth, relatively balanced gameplay and fantastic lore and models
What aspect of the hobby do you enjoy most? e.g. Gaming, painting, converting or just reading the BL books?
I am an all levels fan of the game, from first steps to gaming to the background behind it. Converting is always fun, even if I’m not good at anything beyond kitbashing. The worst parts have to be the early block colouring work on models – the detailing is the fun part, basing everything red or white is boring.
I also have the largely unique position of getting to spend a lot of time creating Heresy content for Heresy Hammer, something that takes me into both deep diving on the lore and the rules. Its been a lot of fun writing dozens of army lists for Legions I don’t play. The danger is that when I write a list and start thinking “yeah I could build that”.
What is the theme and lore behind your force?
My Word Bearer force is large and diverse enough I can do a bit of everything. Drop Pod assault? Covered. Armoured Assault? You betcha. Massed corrupted infantry summoning loads of deamons? Done it. The force even has a Mastadon for when I want to waste 700 points in a list and look good doing it. The force is themed around the Shadow Crusade, with a healthy sprinkling of dead Ultramarines on their bases.
The White Scars started with the intention of going full Chogorian Brotherhood, but has evolved into an infantry heavy, medium range force set as my Siege of Terra army. The Brotherhood of the Falling Star has a lot of jump infantry and anti-grav units. I also want to build an armoured assault company with a militia Leman Russ heavy allied detachment to represent the Terran First Armoured assault on the Lions Head space port from Warhawk.
Can you give us a brief overview of how you painted your army?
The old scheme I used for my Word Bearers was based on the scheme I created when I was 20 years old – Khorne Red, Chainmail, Black Wash, Khorne Red layer and done. My intention over next few years now is to revisit the army and repaint a lot of it. I’m still experimenting with techniques and colours though.
My White Scars are painted in two different ways, using a variety of greys and whites to build up the tone. Infantry then get a heavy enamel wash and clean before chipping and oiling. The vehicles are painted differently, using the same colours, but techniques learnt on Medders Krato’s course instead.
What is your favourite model in your force, either from a modelling or a gaming perspective?
My second Mhara Gal is definitely my favourite model in my WB for both gaming and painting. A mix of genuine FW bits and plastic kits it is actually 99% genuine Games Workshop and green stuff it was a lot of fun to build, as well as paint. When it reaches the table its an absolute terror that keeps on trucking. The Mhara is probably the best dread in the game, and is itself the biggest zero to hero improvement from 1st to 2nd edition.
In my White Scars the Kratos is probably my favourite painting model, just because the skills I learnt doing it unlocked a lot of new things for me in the army. Its pants on the table, but it is fun running an all Volkite Kratos and making a shooting phase like being an Ork.
How does the army perform on the tabletop?
60% of the time, it works everytime. When I steer heavily into the summoning and corrupted mechanics there is little that can stop it – I’ll take credit for using massed summoned Brutes well before anyone else got on the bandwagon.
What are your future plans, either for this army or for another force?
The White Scars are nearly ready to draw a line under, as what’s gone from a small second edition, second Legion army probably numbers around 6000 points now.
Its time to get my Word Bearers back up to fighting force, and redo a lot of the painting.
And of course if we get a new edition and new models then I’ll have to adjust and get both forces where I want them for all those lovely UK events we have next year. Also got tickets for the SN GT in Gibraltar next year so looking forward to meeting new people and playing some good games in the sun!
