Here at HeresyHammer we want to use our platform to help promote and showcase some of the amazing armies out there in our community. These blog posts will look to look at beautiful models and talk a little bit to the person responsible.

What is your name and whereabouts are you based?

When did you first start gaming and what attracted you to the Horus Heresy?

My nerdery began playing Warhammer fantasy with my old man a very long time ago. I got back into the hobby, after the traditional life-gap, when sports teammate Mark came to my house, clocked some heresy novels and confessed he was a massive nerd and that I should be too. We played AT and I started Heresy and he kicked my ass so hard I needed to move cities.

I started off with a NL Swift Blade force which was a good time, but soon after discovered the Xth and left fun and flesh behind for good. Love the Iron Hands pathos, the grief, I love their reputation as one of the ass-kicking Taking Care of Business *TCB legions (big up to DG & IW), love their special units and how Ferrus thinks everyone else is a loser.

I know that this obviously does not make them popular generally, but every time someone complains about the Xth, or makes fun of Big Fez getting his head chopped off, or how they all died – it just makes me love ‘em even harder. I’m sitting at about 15k and you’re all to blame.

What aspect of the hobby do you enjoy most? e.g. Gaming, painting, converting or just reading the BL books?

Love going to events to play wardollies & enjoyed reading the novels, and now the campaign books; I think though that my favourite part is building and converting mooks – there is so much scope to personalise your marines and get all the parts and bits ‘just so’ for your particular force and/or legion.
Love a trawl through bits sites/printers/etsy or whatever for interesting stuff. I gotta say I don’t love painting in of itself, but I like everything being finished!

What is the theme and lore behind your force? Has it developed over time and is there anything that particularly inspired that?

My fellas are Clan Kaargul of the Iron Hands – I envisage them to be part of the fleet Ferrus leaves behind to get to Istvaan; they arrive too late, do a bit of fighting, and break off on their own. Breaking them down further, I’ve got Order Primii which will be my ‘oops all jump packs’ assault company, Order Secundii which is my armoured spearhead, and Order Triarii where all my other gunpigs live.
I’ve also got some Mechanicum that would have been attached to their Expedition Fleet, as well as some allied knights kicking around. Suffice to say, they fly around taking chunks out of the traitors until they can’t no more – and I don’t imagine they survive the heresy. I feel like running around at ‘chapter’ strength like this gives me a lot of freedom. Iron Hand clans were supposed to be self-sufficient, so there’s no (narrative) problem running any combination of stuff or whatever rite of war – they had all the goods in the warehouse ready to go. It also allows me to smack talk other Xth legion clans which I appreciate.

Can you give us an overview of how you painted your army?

I used Cult of Paint’s reimagining of Matt Kane’s oil-slicked Iron Hands recipe, and safe to say it’s too late to go back now.

What is your favourite model in your force, either from a modelling or a gaming perspective?

Pretty chuffed with my Iron Father, enjoyed working with greenstuff on him after the Anpharius course last year.

How does the army perform on the tabletop? Can talk about your win/loss performance, but also how it plays, what sort of tactics you use and any particular memorable moments.

Yeah it does alright – I feel like I build my lists for maybe 70%-80% ‘ardness, so I might avoid some of the event-scene’s autotakes like Contemptors, telepathy wizards or las heavies or whatever and still have good games thanks to something called ‘being-tough-as-f*** privilege’.

What are your future plans, either for this army or for another force?

I am currently building ~80 jump pack marines for the HeresyHammer doubles, as well as rounding out the heavy armour for the spearhead. Overall goal of course is 30k of 30k. I am also currently painting a force of Minotaurs, because you wait ages for a Badab event and of course two show up in the same year.

Anything else you would like to say?

Shout out to Danger Close events, running out of Yate – Aaron, Chris & Terrence the Sandworm.
