Here at HeresyHammer we want to use our platform to help promote and showcase some of the amazing armies out there in our community. These blog posts will look to look at beautiful models and talk a little bit to the person responsible.

What is your name and whereabouts are you based?

When did you first start gaming and what attracted you to the Horus Heresy?

Primary school was the beginning for me with some 40k. Before 30k, I played a lot of Blood Bowl. Horus Heresy seemed to have a great community and I liked the pseudo historical approach. The books were also a key draw.

What aspect of the hobby do you enjoy most? e.g. Gaming, painting, converting or just reading the BL books?

Tricky one. I love painting but I see gaming as the end result – nothing like seeing your painstakingly painted models on the table.

What is the theme and lore behind your force? Has it developed over time and is there anything that particularly inspired that?

My theme is pretty light to be fair. They are the 243rd Assault company which has gone through a few commanding officers and has moved from purely Assault units to including anything with a view to including everything.

Can you give us an overview of how you painted your army?

I started with Dorn’s Arrow’s tutorials. I use an airbrush to put down the Citadel sea greens and add a little purple into the darkest shaded areas. I’m a big fan of Scale 75 metallic paints and have started using more AK paints recently. I use a mixture of dark green, black and brown oil to shade my models. I use AK enamels and Vallejo pigments to add weathering.

What is your favourite model in your force, either from a modelling or a gaming perspective?

Probably my plastic Contemptor. I just really nailed the light and shade on it at a time when I didn’t have an airbrush. In game he’s definitely done some work.

How does the army perform on the tabletop? Can talk about your win/loss performance, but also how it plays, what sort of tactics you use and any particular memorable moments.

I’d maintain that Sons of Horus are one of the lower power Legion factions. I try to have a balanced list that works well on the table without duplicating units or using any particularly ‘meta’ units. My win rate definitely improved when I started to add firepower to a predominantly assault based force. I generally win about half to three quarters of my games.

What are your future plans, either for this army or for another force?

I’m currently working on my purple mech. Almost up to 2.5k. I’ll continue to add to the SoH, hopefully with some more tanks.
